DPella joins GU Ventures as a portfolio company to offer science-based solutions for data privacy
GU Ventures is pleased to announce that the innovative company DPella has joined as one of our portfolio companies. DPella is founded by a group of professors and software entrepreneurs, who started a research collaboration to solve privacy challenges in the real-world. Today, they offer smart, and innovative services based on their academically recognized research and patent-pending technology.
The DPella team is composed of Marco Gaboardi, Carola Compá, and Alejandro Russo. Alejandro Russo and Marco Gaboardi are professors in computer science with expertise in building security solutions for data privacy. Alejandro is located at the Chalmers University/GU University of Technology, in Sweden, while Marco is located at Boston University, USA. Carola Compá, is an architect who is passionate about developing ideas around software and has been running her own software company for nine years.
Privacy solutions are increasingly becoming an essential segment of any industry. However, privacy is hard to get right. Every privacy-related-product needs to be built around solid mathematical foundations to provide strong guarantees. DPellas solutions are designed to enable companies to perform data analytics on private datasets while respecting the privacy of individuals.
DPella secures data analytics so that companies can safely share or monetize them; especially when analytics depend on customers private data. Their mission is to help to open up data insights that would otherwise remain closed due to being afraid of violating privacy regulations.
DPella’s tech disturbs the result of data analytics with (carefully calibrated) random noise to protect the privacy of individuals while providing a notion of how accurate the analytics still are. DPella uses the (mathematical) notion of Differential Privacy, a golden standard for privacy, to explore the trade-offs of privacy and accuracy.
”We are very exited to join GU Ventures! From our very first chat, it was clear to us that you exists to take research ideas out to society and commercialize them. As a deep tech startup, DPella strongly aligns with this vision, which made GU Ventures a natural fit for us. ” says Alejandro Russo and continues;
”First of all, I must say that I was positively surprised with the flexibility to enter GU Ventures’ incubator and the way of working. Having GU Ventures as a partner gives us a strong support on many aspects related to running a company, i.e., from administrative (boring but needed) aspects, persuing business leads, and raising money (something that we will need to do in the coming months). ”
DPella have just signed a NDA to run a proof-of-concept. They are also finishing up a 9-months program at the EU-funded Next Generation of Internet - Data Portability Incubator, where DPella has recently been admitted to the last stage. Only 7 teams, out of the 11 teams who received funding, went through the final phase — and DPella is among them! DPella is also looking for talents for both technical and business aspects of data privacy.
